Walled garden - the Ruskin Crinkle Crankle Club
In 2009 Ruskin College set to work on the dilapidated eighteenth-century walled garden behind the Rookery in Old Headington. The prefabricated children’s nursery and the old hard tennis court were removed, the terraces were re-created, and the walls (which form a Grade II listed structure) were repaired.
Local residents and Ruskin staff and students have formed the ‘Ruskin Crinkle Crankle Club’ (RCCC), named after the garden’s crinkle crankle wall (whose warm brick-lined zigzags maximize the surface area exposed to the sun for fruit-growing), and the garden was formally handed over to the club to cultivate in August 2011. The RCCC is now working to restore this delightful garden to its former glory, planting fruit trees, herbs, and vegetables.
All who are interested in helping with the project, especially Ruskin students, are invited to email ruskincrinklecrankle@gmail.com
Plans for the garden, photographs, and a brief history can be found on the club website here.
The Club will hold open days when everyone can view the work in progress.
