The Webb Institute At Ruskin

The Webb Institute for Leadership in Democracy

The Webb Institute at Ruskin promotes leadership in civil society in Eastern Europe through an accredited programme of education and research.

For many years, labour movement activists from Eastern Europe have been visiting Ruskin College in Oxford, sponsored by the Webb Memorial Trust. Many have gone on to play a strategic role in their home country, defending human rights and establishing democratic institutions. The result is a network of influential people dedicated to economic and social justice across the region. The Webb Institute, established in 2007, brings together previous Webb scholars and new participants in its programmes on its networking site www.webbatruskin.org.

"The Webb Memorial Trust is delighted to support this new Institute, which will enhance the skills of emerging leaders and help strengthen the new democracies."
Mike Parker, Honorary Secretary, Webb Memorial Trust

The Webb Institute for Leadership in Democracy

Here’s what the 2007 participants have to say about us

Leadership Development Programme

“The contents of the programme’s first module, composed of a combination of training on problems of leadership, democracy and equality and meetings with international and UK sister organizations, completely satisfied me…I will be able to share the information from this programme with my own participants.”

“The group was very diverse, but united by the same interest in changing the ways their organisations worked.”

“The place is great. It’s beautiful, calm.”

Women, Leadership and Gender Equality Workshop

“From this we understand detail about status of women in different ways”

“Very useful for future work in promotion of women’s rights”

Methods

“Working in small groups, solving practical and theoretical problems was useful and dynamic.”

“I really liked visiting the organisations. I was able to see just how a strong organisation can be developed. I hope that following the seminar I will be able to create a strategy to achieve the same for my organisation.”

Impact

“The programme is very important for our trade union, as democracy, equality and, most of all, leadership are the symbols of progress and modernisation for our organization, considering the new challenges and threats now facing Ukrainian workers.”

“It was very interesting to work with NGO representatives since, in my country, contact is rare.”
