Porridge and professionalisation: past and present aspects of representation and leadership.
BA ILTUS guest speaker series with:
Bob Hayes – Labour Historian (ex-Ruskin Student)
With the emergence of New Unionism in the late 1880s unions began to adopt ideological as well as purely industrial objectives. Visions of a better society mingled with objectives relating to workplace terms and conditions. At the same time, craft and general unions alike were developing their democratic and representative organisational structures. This paper will explore aspects of the tensions this created, particularly in relation to the rise of professional society – and the adoption of ideals of professionalisation by trade unions.
