Hugh Gallacher

Sender:
Date: 1963-1965

(Posted: 11/05/10)

After a short illness Hugh Gallacher died of cancer on 27 August 2009. Hugh’s approach in life was influenced by a genuine belief in social justice and equality, by a sense of community, by the pursuit of honesty and fairness, by his respect and concern for others and by the value he placed on friendship, companionship and the sharing of good times (preferably with a dram). After leaving Ruskin, Hugh went onto Jesus College (1965-1967) and thereafter returned to the Civil Service. Hugh leaves his wife Edna Margaret, his children Sharon, Shona and Catherine and his grandchildren Samantha, Ben and Lily.

Neal Moore

Sender: Arnold Hadwin
Date: 1951

(Posted: 04/01/06)

Sadly I have just been informed that Neal Moore (1951-52) died on 1 October at the age of 90 in Springfield Missouri. He was a life-long member of the US Typographical Union, editor of several Labor newspapers, including the Union Labor Record in Springfield. Above the masthead on one of his papers were the words: Organised Labor is the bulwalk of democracy.  But his great claim to fame in retirement was as the co-founder of the Ozarks Labour Union Archives at Missouri South University (MSU). He started collecting material in 1983. His collection now has 6,000 square feet of its own in the university library. Teamsters Local 245 leader Jim Kabell said: “Neal had more spirit, more fire at 80,85, even 90 than most people much younger. I always had this feeling of how can I ever quit the fight, when you’ve got Moore out there, working the bellows, fanning the fires.” Whenever Neal came to visit me in England, he always met the T.A. lads at the Oxford Mail.

Paul Whitehorn

Sender: Michelle Whitehorn
Date: 1963-1965

(Posted: 03/06/05)

Paul Whitehorn (1963 - 1965) died of cancer on 29th January 2005 aged 66.  In the Spring Term of 1964 he was elected he was elected Chairman of first year students and in this role conveyed to the Trustees and Principal an almost unanimous vote of ‘No Confidence’ in the management of the college based upon student outrage that a TV set was not allowed in the Common Room at the Rookery.  It was thought that mature working men and women would be distracted from their studies by the presence of a TV set.

His contemporary the late Tony Ward formed a Ruskin based R & B band, “Leon & the Trots”, and Paul was the drummer in this popular group which played gigs around Oxford Colleges and the Home Counties including exclusive dining and other clubs.

Paul leaves his wife Helen and their three children, Michelle, Brendan and Caspar.
