Tom has been a tutor at Ruskin College since 1986 and the lead tutor in English Studies since 1997. His research interests are in adult education and English Literature. He has published material jointly in this area.

His teaching ranges from Elizabethan and Jacobean drama to modern and postmodern poetry and prose and he has a particular interest in adaptation of canonical literature for film and television.

He has developed teaching in postcolonial literature with a particular interest in Anglophone Caribbean works. He has also developed teaching in modern Irish literature. He developed modules in critical reading and writing, which have been an important bridge in building the English literature and Creative Writing programme.
