Dr Des McDermott

I have been involved in social work practice and education for over thirty years. Before teaching at Ruskin College, I was employed for over twenty years in a variety of roles with children and young people and adult mental health services in and around London. These positions have included Senior Practitioner and Consultant Social Worker roles in statutory mental health services.

I have taught on the BA (Hons) Social Work at Ruskin College since 2006. I currently teach across all of the academic levels of the BA Social Work programme and regularly contibute to other academic programmes at Ruskin College. This includes providing individual supervision for students completing final year dissertations. I have a long standing interest in the classical Marxist and radical social work traditions and I have published articles and chapters on anti-racism, mental health, strengths based approaches and radical social work. I am interested in drawing on wider social science knowledge and social movements to inform social work theory and practice. I am also interested in social research that promotes the perspectives of service users and frontline practitioners in mental health.

I am a lifelong trade unionist and am Chair of Ruskin College UCU Branch. UCU is the trade union for teachers and lecturers in Further and Higher Eduction in Britain.
