Dr Des McDermott joined Ruskin College in 2006 and has over twenty years experience in social work practice. He has been employed as a social worker in both children and families services and mental health services.
Des has worked as an Approved Social Worker, Senior Practitioner, Senior Social Worker and Consultant Social Worker in statutory services in and around London. He has also worked as a freelance trainer and has provided training on a wide range of topics to health and social care professionals.
Des teaches on the Sociology, Social Policy, Principles and Practice of Social Work and Research modules of the BA Social Work. Des is interested in the application of social policy, sociological theory and social research to mental health social work. He also has a particular interest in case study research and the involvement of service users, carers and professionals in the research process.
