Get Growing! Basic Horticulture Skills
This course will introduce you to horticulture, giving you the skills and confidence to start growing your own plants, whether in a windowbox, city garden or across rolling acres!
Build up your knowledge and skills as the seasons unfold in the beautiful walled garden, orchard and meadow of Ruskin College.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course you will gain practical skills in and knowledge of:
- Tools – identification, usage, care
- Soil – compost, nutrients, soil fauna
- Propagation – seed sowing, cuttings, division
- Pests and diseases – identification, treatment and prevention
- Gardening with wildlife in mind
- Botany – the roles of different plant parts, identifying, labeling, different types of plant
- Flower, fruit and vegetable growing
- Basic maintenance, deadheading, pruning, weeding, lawn care
- Planning for their own garden

- Observation
- Informal questioning
- Short activities
- Garden journal

All resources and materials for this course will be provided. Written material will be available on google classroom.

What will it cost me?
The cost for this course is £120. It is free if you are unemployed or earning less than £17,004 per annum.
