English E-Functional Skills is an online Functional Skills teaching and learning resource designed to help guide you from initial assessment to exam success as an independent student.
English E- Functional Skills Entry level - Level 2 (you will be working at the level that is right for you) contains content that is mapped to and written exclusively for the Functional Skills curriculum and Functional Skills qualifications.
The English e-Functional Skills online teaching and learning resources are fully compatible with mobile and tablet devices and allow you to learn at your own pace. A free initial assessment tool and bite sized diagnostics create an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) targets your skills gaps and provides engaging e-learning resources to assist you develop your knowledge and check your progress.
The English e-Functional Skills are widely recognised by employers and
accredited by City and Guilds who are regulated by OFQUAL
E-Functional Skills is an online digital learning resource for learners undertaking their Functional Skills qualification.
E-Functional Skills will help you to complete your Functional Skills qualification by thoroughly preparing you for your exam.
There are three key parts to e-Functional Skills:
Initial and diagnostic assessment
The initial and diagnostic tests are online tests to determine your ability and ‘skills level.’ The initial assessment determines your overall skills level and the diagnostic tests help identify areas where you might be struggling slightly and need to focus your learning.
E-Functional Skills contains 100s of course resources including lessons, video clips and interactive quizzes to help guide you through the course and check your progress.
Practice tests and exam guidance will help you prepare and gain confidence for your final exam.
This is an online course that you can start at any time. The course will include completion of online resources, sample papers and an exam paper at the level that you are working at (determined by the initial assessment). Once enrolled, these resources will be available to you to access at a time that suits you. It will involve around 45-55 hours of independent study.
To support these resources you will be able to attend 2 hour evening workshops that run every other week. This will be tutor directed and will reinforce your learning, address any issues you may have and prepare you for the exams.
You will need to complete 3 exams at Ruskin College following completion of the online resources.
On successful completion and achievement of course you will receive a City and Guilds certificate in Functional Skills English at the level that you are working at. If you are working below Level 2 you are then able to progress to the next level.
This course is free for all students as long as you do not have an A*-C in GCSE English Language.
Ordinarily you will need to be a citizen of a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) and have been resident in a country within the EEA for 3 years, excluding Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. However, if you are a refugee or asylum seeker, please get in touch as you may be eligible for funding.

Achieving these qualifications will increase your confidence and motivation, and the skills you gain will be valuable in the workplace.
This course will support your development of English skills which are crucial to furthering your employment opportunities and to progress with further study and/or higher education. You will be able to work through the different levels of this qualification until you reach level 2 which is the same level as an A* to C at GCSE.
Possibilities for progression to further study could include applying for one of our progression residential courses to get a taste of College life, our Preparing for Employment course or our Preparing for Further Study if that is your focus. By completing our Pre-Access in Skills for Social Care or our L2 Certificate in Writing for a Career in the Arts this could form part of your pathway to Access to HE.
We offer Access to HE in Health Professions, Social Science or Health and Social Care. Improving your English Skills will support your application for all of these possible courses.
