I am the Programme Leader in Trade Union Education at Ruskin.
I started work in the mining industry and was an active member of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). I held various positions in the NUM and attended conferences as a delegate and was part of international delegations. I was an active NUM member in the 1984/85 strike. I started studying whilst still working underground with the Open University and once the last mine in south Wales closed was offered the opportunity to start tutoring on trade union courses for Swansea University and the WEA. I completed a Post Graduate Diploma in European Adult Continuing Education at Swansea University. I also undertook a Teaching Certificate in Further and Higher Education.
I then worked as a National Casework / Negotiating Officer for the Community and Youth Workers Union (now part of Unite) for 8 plus years before returning to tutor in trade union courses. I worked as a Visiting Tutor for nearly eight years before being appointed to the post at Ruskin College in September 2015.
I have written a number of articles for trade union journals.
