What are the qualifications about?
This popular degree combines Sociology, Politics, Psychology and Economics, so you can study a wide range of social science disciplines and get a deeper understanding of the world around you. You will address social issues such as poverty and social exclusion, explore public policy and find out how social, economic, and political decision-making influences people’s lives. You will gain a deep understanding of the lives of individuals, communities and workplaces, and the issues faced by vulnerable individuals and groups in our society.

If you have previous experience in the social sciences or life experience which has enhanced your understanding of these areas, this would be a great course for you.
What do I need?
There is no specific level 3 qualification required but you will need English at Level 2 and a commitment to achieving Level 2 in Maths during the course.

How will I learn and be assessed?
You will enjoy a variety of learning methods, such as a mini lectures, pair and group work, learning checks, and tutor and student led discussions. You will be assessed through essays (approx 90%) and presentations (approx 10%).

What jobs could they lead to?
After successful completion of the programme you will be awarded a BA (Hons) in Applied Social Science, awarded by Newman University. The programme has a clear, practical and vocational character that aims to support your entry into a range of public and third sector professions, or to help you develop and advance your existing career, both in the UK and internationally.
You may find employment within the public sector and the third sector, and our students have gone on to work with homeless people’s organisations, in services for older and disabled people, and in the human services such as: housing, welfare-to-work and community development.
After graduating from Ruskin, more than 30% of students progress to postgraduate study at universities including King’s College, Warwick and Oxford. Many go on to secure careers in the social sciences arena, with some achieving desirable trainee positions.
